Breathtaking, Rain or Shine

On the sunny, cloudless days, we marvel at the towering mountain peaks as we view how far the glaciers have traveled to reach the sea. The Chugach National Forest is a temperate rainforest. When precipitation is present, it adds a mystical element to the day. Clouds gather and dampen the sky while filtering the bright sunlight, which allows us to see the glaciers turn a brilliant blue when shielded from the glare of bright sunshine. The best days to cruise feature a mix of weather that generates the best photos. We always recommend being prepared for all conditions by dressing in layers to be comfortable, no matter what the weather brings your way. Any day on the calm water in Prince William Sound with Phillips Cruises is always outstanding!

See glaciers up close in Prince William Sound

Glaciers, wildlife, mountains, and miles of pristine wilderness areas in Prince William Sound provide endless photo opportunities. Our glacier cruises provide a safe and affordable way to view these spectacular areas, rain or shine, as the seasons change during the summer. Study the glaciers from afar, and as your captain eases up close to the tidewater glaciers, the crew will scoop up some glacier ice for you to touch or enjoy in our Glacier Ice Margaritas.

Watch wildlife in Prince William Sound

During the cruise, keep your camera ready for the wildlife we see along the way. You won’t want to miss a chance for a photo of an adorable sea otter or harbor seal. Video works best when Dall’s porpoise or whales are moving quickly. Depending on your camera, you may even want to rent a zoom lens from one of the camera shops in Anchorage for the day. You’ll be taking photos like the pros in no time!

Getting to Whittier by rail

One of our favorite ways to get to Whittier is on the Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery train. Combine the history of Alaska’s beloved railroad with the incredible glaciers and wildlife you’ll see in Prince William Sound on our cruises. Book a round-trip from Anchorage or Girdwood for the Glacier Quest Cruise or get a coach & rail combo package for the 26 Glacier Cruise.

Explore Whittier Alaska

Nestled against the mountains and resting on the shore of Prince William Sound, the “light at the end of the tunnel” shines bright in Whittier, Alaska, a quaint seaside town home to just over 200 residents. Known as the “Gateway to Prince William Sound”, Alaskans seeking adventures on the water choose Whittier for the calm waters and quick access from Anchorage.

Alaska holds the title for the state with the most bird species. With 530 species of birds documented in Alaska, even the most seasoned birders need to look things up sometimes.
