Whittier Tunnel Guide
The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is the only road into Whittier. At 2.5 miles, it is North America's longest combined highway-and-railroad tunnel, coordinating traffic in alternating directions.
One-Way Directional Alternating
Traffic alternates direction in and out of Whittier on a set hourly schedule. Passing inside the tunnel is strictly prohibited.
Shared Railroad Trackway
The Alaska Railroad trains share the single lane trackbed, and schedules are carefully coordinated daily.
Portage Toll Station
Tolls apply to vehicles entering Whittier (westbound). Credit cards and cash are accepted at the Portage Toll Gate.
Recommended Tunnel Openings
Aim for the tunnel times below to allow sufficient time for parking, checking in, and boarding. Peak summer weekends can see high traffic; arriving one opening earlier is highly recommended.
